Our Mission

Dismantle's mission is abolition.

Our aim is to completely divest from and disassemble the current power and abuse systems of capitalism, white supremacy, patriarchy and neo colonialism, while supporting and building frameworks rooted in equity, social justice, intersectional feminism and queer liberation.

Abolition

We are dismantling and abolishing structures and systems that do not - and never have - served all people.

“The project of abolition, whether it's police abolition or prison abolition, immigration detention abolition, is to basically make those structures obsolete because the social problems they were designed to address are no longer being siphoned into those harmful racist institutions.”

- Angélica Cházaro, Activist and Assistant Professor at the University of Washington School of Law

Black people represent 7% of Seattle’s population. In 2019, “32% of all uses of force and 27% of instances of drawn firearms by Seattle Police were directed toward Black people”.

Our Beginnings

On June 1st, Attorney Talitha Hazelton stayed up all night drafting a personal restraint petition to challenge the King County Superior Court's arbitrary denial of Preliminary hearings for close to 100 people held in the King County Jail and the RJC, on June 1st. This is following the largest Black Lives Matter demonstrations that took place two days earlier, where 55 protesters were arrested in only one day.

The petition, filed before 8 am on June 2nd, is on behalf of one client and provides a framework for protester representation. Our team of attorneys are completing jail visits and processing documentation in order to defend protester rights and the freedom of our communities.

Over the last month, we raised over $41 000 to support protester representation thanks to the incredible generosity of our communities.

100% of these funds are dedicated to defending protesters and compensating community members that have been working relentlessly to ensure that they see freedom. We believe in transparency and will continue to share developments through our Direct Action Updates page.

Please reach out if you are aware of protesters who have been arrested.

Black Lives Matter.
